Chengdu is the transportation hub in southwest China.
Radiating to all directions, Chengdu’s highway network totals 5,300 km, ranking 2nd among the 16 sub-provincial-level cities of China. Its highway density is 43.2 km per 100 sq km, ranking among the first in China with 5.5 km for every 10,000 people. In the boundaries of Chengdu, there are 50 km of expressway, over 500 km of 4-lane high-class highway, plus 6 national and 8 provincial highways running through Chengdu. Besides, there are i00-plus county highways with a total mileage of 2,000 km. All of the 300 towns and townships of Chengdu are connected by highways. The total number of automobiles in the city adds up to nearly 500,000.
The Baoji-Chengdu, Chengdu-Chongqing, Chengdu-Kunming and Chengdu-Dachuan railways closely connect the city with the rest of China. The largest marshalling station in southwest China, the Chengdu Railway Station delivers and receives more than 60 trains and 120,000 passenger-times on a daily basis. There are 255 km of railway within the boundaries of Chengdu.
The Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport is the largest in southwest China as well as one of the four largest in the nation. Currently, there are three airliners in Chengdu, offering services for 200 air routes. Among them, the Southwest Airline operates more than 140 routes for a total route length of 160,000 km, reaching over 50 large and medium-sized domestic and foreign cities.
- The public buses of about 100 routes reach all corners of Chengdu.
On the thoroughfares and small lanes of Chengdu run over 6,000 taxis, the brands of which include Alto, Xiali, Citreon, Santana and Ford. The meter is used to keep the mileage charge. The passenger may call 6636630 to complain, if need be, and is entitled to ask for the receipt from the taxi driver, which is generally used as evidence for such complaint.

Chengdu has many man-powered tricycles, the charge of which is similar to or slightly more expensive than that of taxis. One may bargain with the driver. Riding this means of transportation may be more convenient and faster during rush hours. If the passenger knows the route or rough distance, he may negotiate with the driver for a reasonable fare.
